tae kwon ope

This one is a fun concept that we fully explored in this video. If martial arts are based on self-defense, and regions of the world have their own martial art, then a martial art based in the Midwest must be…nice? We decided that the best vehicle for this concept was a local news story. Often one of the objectives in our comedy is to confuse and delight. Tae Kwon Ope really pulls that off—”is this a real news story? I don’t care, it’s funny.”

quick analysis

In comedic videos, like sketch comedy, like improv, it is important to stay tethered to one idea, or one game. You can veer a bit, but you have to stay centered. For Tae Kwon Ope we dove straight into the game—a martial art based out of the Midwest that is centered on niceness. We were able to add flourishes to that idea by putting it in the context of a local news story and all of the oddities of that. This one was also powered by really good, believable performances from the actors.
